Makeup artist Gayle Brewer creates art - one client at at time By Kevin Smith Staff Writer Posted: 02/09/2010 10:22:52  - When Gayle Brewer was stationed in Iraq, makeup was hard to come by. In that war-torn country's arid climate, keeping hydrated and safe were priorities. Looking good was not. But Brewer was creative. "We had to create our own makeup," the 26-year-old Arcadia resident said. "We made face masks out of dirt ... it's really good for your pores. We had to do a bunch of stuff because we weren't looking like girls anymore." Brewer ended her eight-year Army stint in December and is now focused on Celia Caserta Inc., her Pasadena-based company that offers professional makeup services. The business provides makeup applications and consultation for television, movies and print media photo shoots as well as weddings and red-carpet events. A graduate of the MKC Beauty Academy in Los Angeles, Brewer is building a business that caters to everyone. "I am a Latina, so I tend to attract a lot of Latina clients," she said. "But we've branched out to the Asian market, too. I have a lot of tips for Latinas because I've grown up with them. They tend to make the same mistakes. The applications can be completely different. You can't put eyeliner on an oval-shaped eye the same way you would on an Asian eye." Celia Caserta is currently based in Pasadena, but Brewer plans to expand. "I plan to open a location in Arcadia and another one in Northridge," she said. "I'm staying busy. I even get calls to go to Mexico to do makeup work there." Anton Caserta, Brewer's husband, serves as vice president of the business. Brewer admits the competition is fierce. "There are so many good makeup artists," she said. "There is plenty of competition out there, but I get my business by word of mouth. If you love what you do, you'll get work." Priscilla Noboa, 25, of Chino Hills recently had Brewer do a makeover on her. "I heard about her through a co-worker," Noboa said. "I was told she was really good, so I went and tried it and I loved it. My face feels fresh and my eyes came out really nice." Amber Rice, another client, said Brewer was able to work wonders. "She came to my rescue after my skin was burned from waxing my eyebrows," Rice said. "You couldn't even tell after Gayle was done ... The burns were gone in a day." Brewer said she loves to watch a customer's reaction after she performs a makeover. "Some of them might have low self-esteem, but when you explain little things that can change their appearance and then give them the whole transformation ... then I feel like I've done my job."
